Lucas Gilman leads a portrait lighting class during Sports Shooter Academy II.
Outdoor and sports photographer Lucas Gilman has joined the faculty of the upcoming Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp.

"Adding Lucas to our faculty gives this workshop even more diversity and another wonderful photographer who really enjoys teaching and sharing his knowledge," said Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter founder and the workshop's director.

The Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp is being held September 5 & 6, 2008 in Orange County, CA. Gilman was previously on the faculty of Sports Shooter Academy II.

Currently Gilman is covering the Tour de France for ESPN. You can see his work at this link:

"Everything is wonderful in France," Gilman wrote in an email about his current assignment. "The people have been so friendly and helpful. It is a beautiful country!!! Days are long and we have driven almost 3,000 kilometers already and it is only stage 8 (and) many more to go."

Gilman joins Robert Beck (Sports Illustrated), Matt Brown (Southern California freelancer), Michael Goulding (Orange County Register), David Honl (International freelancer), Myung J. Chun (Los Angeles Times) and Hanashiro (USA TODAY) on the workshop faculty. The Boot Camp staff will be made up of Crystal Chatham, Jordan Murph and Susanica Tam.

Hanashiro said "there are just a few spaces left" in the Boot Camp and once the workshop is filled, a waiting list will be started with openings filled on a first-come-first-served basis.

The Boot Camp is a two-day hands-on, shooting education program with a different emphasis each day. Participants can register for single day or attend both days.
The Boot Camp enrollment will be smaller than the 5-day Sports Shooter Academy, with the emphasis on smaller working groups.

Day 1 on Friday, September 5 will be a football workshop with participants shooting both "American football" and futball (aka: soccer). Boot Campers will cover the opening day of a college soccer tournament at Cal State Fullerton in the afternoon and in the evening, for those that want to shoot some football, we will lead a group to the Santa Ana Bowl for the Santa Ana College vs. Cypress College game. Because we will be shooting soccer, we will have a remotes class at the stadium prior to the start of the first game. The evening will be one-on-one editing and critique sessions with the workshop faculty and the best work from each participant will be shown and awards given out for the top photographs.

Day 2 on Saturday, September 6 will be a day-long lighting workshop/shoot out. Participants will break in small groups of 6 - 8 and groups will rotate through different portrait scenarios. Athletes and models will be at different locations for the participants to pose and light under the guidance of the Boot Camp faculty. Lighting equipment from speedlites to studio strobes will be used to make portraits in the various set ups. The evening will be one-on-one editing and critiques with the workshop faculty and the best work from each participant will be shown and awards given out for the top photographs.

"The Boot Camp, like the 5-day Sports Shooter Academy will give participants an opportunity to shoot, learn, receive on site advice and helpful tips and nightly one-on-one critiques from the faculty," Hanashiro said, "But I think this format will lend itself to a lot more fun and a lot of contact between the faculty and the participants. There really is no other workshop out there like the Boot Camp or The Academy."

The Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp is sponsored by Nikon and the company will have its latest digital cameras, lenses, speedlites and other accessories available for participants to check out to use during the workshop. Nikon personnel will be on hand to help participants with the loaner gear and answer questions.

Dyna-Lite, Samy's Camera and Think Tank Photo are Boot Camp supporters. Dyna-Lite will be providing some of their lighting equipment for participants to use during Saturday's lighting workshop. Samy's Camera will be providing registered participants a discount on any rental equipment during the workshop.

Registration fees for the Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp are $175 for a single day and $275 for both days. Full-time college students receive a 10% discount.

"The great Southern California weather, a fabulous faculty, soccer, football, learning about remotes and portrait lighting ... what a wonderful weekend of photography this will be," said Hanashiro.
