I had a travel assignment in the Western Nebraska Sandhills.
This update is a few snippets and below is a description of two of the photos.
When is the last time you shot film for a NY Times assignment? I borrowed my dad's Nikon F2.
Snake River Falls is slightly difficult to get to in the daytime. You have to climb down a rocky trail that has been eroded by water.
For a star trails photo you have to work in complete darkness. I was unable to find the trail at night and foraged my own way down through the rocks with one flashlight in my mouth and one in my hand. I was worried about tripping and swallowing the flashlight in my mouth.
I had trouble composing the shot in the darkness and my flashlights weren't as bright as I had thought in the vast expanse of Snake River Falls. I finally settled on a small sandy spot near the river. I couldn't see the falls, but their thunderous roar told me where they were. I opened the shutter and sat on a blanket. I had started to lie down when I remembered all the numerous warnings I received about rattle snakes in area.
Looking up into the great expanse of the universe you see stars you will never see in the city. I was accompanied by Miles Davis, Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band and some Pink Floyd on my ipod. Every now and then stray maracas would cause me to leap up in a panic that a rattle snake was curious.
After several hours I climbed out, dirty and tired.

VISUAL MERCENARY
(freelance photojournalist)
-----------------------------
Hi, I am freelance photog in the midwest. My work has been seen from USA Today to national magazines. I love to work on short notice.
I created a gallery called "Air Hockey" where the theme is at least one person in each photo must have both feet off the ground. Check it out on the bottom.
