--------------------------------------
I've spent the last week documenting a group of blacksmiths in Diyarbakir, Turkey. Diyarbakir is the heart of Turkish Kurdistan and has been a hotspot during recent conflict between the Kurdish PKK seperatists and the Turkish Military. I stumbled upon this group while exploring the city on my second day here. They operate about a dozen shops located in a narrow alley just off one of the main roads, specializing in fabricating and repairing agricultural equipment ranging from hammers, knives, and shovels to complex items such as wolf traps. A large portion of the work is still done by hand using hammers and specialized tools, with only occasional assistance from machinery. It is impressive to say the least the amount of energy they exert during the 10hr work day. I have a day or maybe two left to photograph this story, any feedback or comments would be welcome.
